2. Ensure that you have about 2.5 GB free space in some partition, preferably C:

Some Useful DOS Commands

Below is a listing of each of the MS-DOS commands currently listed on Computer Hope and a brief explanation of what each of the commands do. The below commands are all MS-DOS commands, which means not all the below commands will work in your version of MS-DOS and/or Windows command line. How To Change Thumbnail Size And Quality

If any of you out there like to use the thumbnail view, especially for browsing through photos and images, it can become a bit of a drain on your system. It is possible to lower the thumbnail size and quality by editing the following registry keys.

Open the registry and navigate to :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft \ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer

Create a new DWORD value called ThumbnailSize, and set the value between 32 and 256.

And/or create another DWORD value called ThumbnailQuality, and set the value between 50 and 100.

Notepad Tricks

1. Using Notepad As A Log Book

Open Notepad, write “.LOG” (without quotes) on the top, save the file and close it. Open the file again, and you will find the current date and time on it. Add text and save and close again. Every time you open it, it will have a timestamp. Use it to make your daily notes, a diary, etc. Alternatively you can press F5 to get the current date and time.

2. Changing Header and Footer

Ever printed the little text you wrote in Notepad ? More often than not, the printout starts with “Untitled” or the filename at top, and “Page 1? on bottom. Want to get rid of it, or change it? Click on File, Page Setup. Get rid of the characters in Header and Footer boxes, and write what you want as Header and Footer. Use the following codes.

&l Left-align the characters that follow
&c Center the characters that follow
&r Right-align the characters that follow
&d Print the current date
&t Print the current time
&f Print the name of the document
&p Print the page number

3. Weird Thing

1. Open notepad and type this : "bush hid the facts" (without the quotes).
2. Save it as bush.txt.
3. Open the file again and see the result.

Shortcuts in XP

Create a new shortcut:

Rightclick the desktop or any folder and select New/Shortcut from the context menu.
On the shortcut dialogue box enter the location of the file you wish the shortcut to run as well as any commandline args and click Next.
On the next screen enter the name you would like displayed underneath the shortcut and click Finish.




Change a shortcut's icon.

Right-click the shortcut and select Properties from the context menu.
On the shortcut's Properties dialogue box click the Change Icon button.[
The Change Icon dialogue box will appear and usually will be pointed to the file

NOTE: SHELL32.dll has a lot of nice standard windows icons in it and if you use one of them and later on change your theme, the shortcut's icon will change automatically as well. If you don't like any of those icons then browse around the filesystem and you will quickly discover that nearly every dll file in the harddrive has an icon you can choose and some have more than one. If you have a programming package of any kind it will usually contain a large number of icons you may use as well.
After selecting the icon you like click OK to close that dialogue and click OK to close the shortcut's dialogue box.




Create Shutdown shortcut.

Create a new shortcut.
Enter the following for the location:

Set the name to something descriptive like, I don't know... Shutdown. and click Finish.

Create a new shortcut.
Enter the following for the location:

XP tricks 2

1.1 MULTIPLE COLUMNS FOR THE START MENU

To make Windows use multiple Start Menu Columns instead of a single scrolling column, like Windows 95 had:

1. Open RegEdit
2. Go to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
3. Create a string value "StartMenuScrollPrograms"
4. Right click the new string value and select modify
5. Set the value to "FALSE"


1.2 DISABLING DRIVES IN MY COMPUTER

To turn off the display of local or networked drives when you click on My Computer:

1.Open RegEdit
2.Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
3.Add a New DWORD item and name it NoDrives
4.Give it a value of 3FFFFFF
5.Now when you click on My Computer, none of your drives will show.

1.3 To add or remove programs in the Registry

1.Open RegEdit
2.Go to the desired Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

By adding the value to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive instead allows the program to start only when that user is logged on.

If you add the value to the RunOnce key the program will run once and be removed from the key by Windows.

1.4 To convert a FAT partition to NTFS, perform the following:

Click Start, click Programs, and then click Command Prompt.
In Windows XP, click Start, and then click Run.
At the command prompt, type CONVERT [driveletter]: /FS:NTFS.
Convert.exe will attempt to convert the partition to NTFS.

1.5 How to Make a Computer Crash

Improve Your Dial Up Speed

This post deals with the methods to improve your browsing experience...ecpecially for my friends using DIAL UP modem.

2.1 Follow these simple steps.

You can't assume that just because you connected at a speed like 48.3KBps that you will stay there. Today's modems automatically fall back to a lower speed if the line noise is too high to maintain a faster connection, but sometimes they fall back too soon or too far.

Here's how to do it:


Click Start the button.
Select Settings.
Click Control Panel.
Double-click on the Modems icon.
Select your modem.
Click the Properties button.
Click the Connections tab.
Click the Advanced button.
In the "Extra settings" field, type S36=7
Click OK to save your settings.


This will force your modem to try to stay connected at high speeds in two different ways before dropping back to an asynchronous mode with auto speed buffering.
2.2 Increase your bandwidth by 20%

This is one of the most popular tricks to increase your connection speed.
i am wrong here if i say "to increase your speed" cuz in this trick you recover the band width that you already deserve.So here it goes.

Increasing Band-Width By 20%
Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc

To get it back:

Click Start then Run and type "gpedit.msc" without quotes.This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:
Local Computer Policy then Computer Configuration then Administrative Templates then Network then QOS Packet Scheduler and then to Limit Reservable Bandwidth.

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."
So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well.


2.3 The Final post to improve your browsing speed on a dial up conncetion.

This tip works on ALL Windows 95/98/ME and NT4/2000 systems with MS Internet Explorer 4/5/6 installed. This Registry tip speeds up internet/remote (using Windows Explorer and/or Internet Explorer) browsing process considerably on most MS Windows 32-bit machines connected to a network and/or remote computer(s).
This actually fixes a BUG in MS Windows OSes that scan shared (remote) folders/files across the network for Scheduled Tasks, and can add a delay as long as 30 seconds (!), because it uses extra time to search the remote computer(s). To do this, open Regedit (Win95/98/ME) or Regedt32 (WinNT4/2000) and go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace
Highlight this value:
{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}
and delete it: right-click on it -> select Delete -> click OK.
RECOMMENDED: Export (BACKUP) this Registry key to a REG file FIRST, to be able to restore it (by running the REG file) if necessary. In Regedit: highlight the key name in the left hand pane -> click "Registry" from the menu -> select "Export Registry File..." -> type a file name in the "File name" field -> browse to the destination of your choice -> push the Save button.
This Registry change takes effect immediately. Just start MS IE while connected to the network/internet to see the difference.
NOTE: Upgrading to a newer MS Internet Explorer release may add this key to your Registry during Setup, therefore you may need to delete it again after installing MS IE.anyway guys , this seems to be efficient to some extent ...

Get to Control Panel. If you use XP, switch to
classic view. Double click phone and modem options, modems,
properties,advanced, and click on Extra Initialization
commands. Now enter AT&FX (try &AX&FX if that command doesn't
work) and hit ok. Now connect to the internet and notice you
boost in speed!

8. Click Next

9. Select "Change Product Key"

Don’t worry about asking again to register.

Restart the system and repeat steps 6 to 11, now the process will tell you that Windows XP is already activated.
